A Study Of . . . Washington NJ / Cornish Piano & Organ Factory Drawing, #001

#001 cornish piano + organ factory drawing

One drawing is worth a thousand words.  The Cornish Piano & Organ Factory sat on the corner of W Washington Ave & S Lincoln Ave (then known as Hornbaker St), and although it seemed to be a fairly compact building, it was, in fact, quite large, as can be seen by this view. The structure was built in dribs and drabs, and did not look like this until 1896. The original building consisted of only the right 1/3 portion of the front section, and was built in 1858 by Jacob Fitts, who made furniture. In 1865, Pittenger & Sons, also furniture makers, took over; and in 1880, the Cornish Company bought it. Their business grew so rapidly that an addition was added in 1882, another in 1886, two in 1890, and the final addition in 1896, at which time the building was also given a face-lift to unify the look of the facade.  (Caption by Thomas Allen Kelley)
