A Study Of . . . Washington NJ / Post Office Building Foundation, #011

#011 post office building under construction

A strong foundation upon which to build.  The date is June 6, 1939, and the Christine/Hannon house has been completely cleared away. Work is well along on the replacement structure: A United States Post Office for Washington NJ. The cornerstone was laid on Nov 18, 1939, with the official opening date being Dec 4, 1939. The view is from the back, in what is now the post office employee parking lot, looking toward the front, and Belvidere Ave. Directly ahead, in the center of the photo, is the old Boro Hall and Fire House, which is now (as of this writing in 1999) the Mueller Building, home of the Washington Messenger monthly town news pamphlet.  (Photo by Harry Minassian; caption by Thomas Allen Kelley)
